I really need to find time to post here more than twice a year. Is it find time or make time? Hmmmm.... With the warm weather finally here, there is so much to do outside. We just opened the pool last week. That was quite a job. Nice and clean and sparkly. Now it just needs to warm up a tad. Did a little planting in the flower beds and veggie garden. Well, the only thing I planted were potatoes. My mother-in- law did the rest..... I kept telling her we would do it together, but like this blog I haven't been very consistent. You know how it is being pulled in a million directions. Not enough hours in the day when you work all day and have to come home and work too! Hope to post some pics soon of our new flag pole. We pretty much ripped the flower bed apart and I got rid of some my hostas, had way too many and I wanted color! That instant gratification you get from annuals. So I think we will go that route for this flower bed, maybe some reds, purples and yellows!

Shop the Farmhouse

Brrrrrrr...baby it's cold outside. I feel like we are living in the Tundra in upstate New York. We are used to cold weather in January, but this beyond cold. The wind is gusting and snow drifts everywhere. One minute it's clear and the next is a whiteout. It's been brutally cold for the last week and the weather claims it's here to stay for the next couple of weeks. It's been snowing every day since New Years Eve. Not a lot each day, but enough to add up to around 10 inches or so. And we are expecting a snow storm Thursday night.

Well the Christmas decorations are all down and packed away. The house looks so "BIG" now. I really love Christmas and everything that goes along with it, but it sure is nice when it comes time to take it all down and clean really good. And of course a great opportunity to re-arrange furniture. It's funny, the hubby always seems to not be around then.

I hope your new year is starting out great! We decided on New Years Eve to go out and try to find a new stove. I didn't bake any cookies this year, mostly because my new job kept me so busy, but also because of the stove we had. It was only two years old, but the oven was not even close to being accurate. I always had to guess what to set it at and how long to bake anything. I finally got fed up with it when I cooked a meat loaf last week and after an hour in the oven, it was still raw in the middle. YUK! So frustrating. So after a little temper tantrum (smile) our new stove will be in Thursday. I did some research and found the GE Profile had the best reviews. That little sucker is awesome! It has a convection oven and a meat probe which I find just fascinating. It's just like a meat thermometer, and once whatever you are cooking is done the oven just shuts it self off. Even someone like me can't screw that up! LOL I can't wait to cook a roast! Sometimes the smallest little things make us so happy.

Shopping, tweaking, and crafting…sorta

We are having a pretty good Sunday here. The “monster” snow storm missed us completely. My brother in Virginia was not so lucky. They got over a foot of snow. This was the most snow in that area in over 15 years.

We went out this morning to tackle the crowds once again for more Christmas shopping. I am making no- sew fleece blankets for my daughters and my mother-in-law. (This is the crafting….sorta part of the title) Of course, the procrastinator that I am, this was a last minute idea. So I had to get up early and get to Joann Fabrics first thing. They had their fleece 50% off. I’m making them throw size just big enough to cuddle up on the couch with. They are just so warm and cuddly! I hope they like them. I know I would much rather have a gift someone took the time and patience to make especially for me. It means so much more than anything store bought, no matter what the price, Don’t you agree?

I got these adorable little snowballs and snowmen soap from the thecandlebaker on ebay. They are all primed up with with cinnamon and mica flakes.

And last but not least, I just have to show you my little grandson Jayden. He is almost 3 months old and the most adorable little boy. What a face, huh? He’s a really good boy and loves his swing. He has one in almost every room of the house. I don’t think he’s slept in his crib yet. He has to be moving constantly. LOL

I started this post this afternoon and it’s after 8 now and am just now finishing it. I did get one blanket finished ~~ now two more to go. I will try and get a photo up before I wrap it. It turned out pretty good considering it was my first one.

Tweaking and a new camera

It’s a rainy and snowy day here. A good day to do some baking and tweaking! I’ve been puttering all morning, really glad I don’t have to go out in this mess. The coal stove is keeping us toasty warm. Walking around moving and changing things around…..again. When I finally get it the way I want it, Christmas will be over. :-)

After weeks of research and asking fellow bloggers what kind of camera they use, I finally went out and bought a new camera last night. I can’t tell you how frustrated I was with my little Sony cyber shot. I just couldn’t get the results I wanted from a point and shoot camera. I am so excited with the new one. It’s a Canon Rebel XS digital SLR. I have by no means mastered this beast, but I have been playing around all day with it. I took some pics of a few more changes and additions to our Christmas decor. Here’s just a few. Now, keep in mind I still have a lot to learn. LOL

I love, love, love this camera! When I learn what all the settings are for, then I can really take some good pictures. The difference between this camera and my little point an shoot camera is amazing, don’t ya think?

Wow, October just flew by, didn’t it? Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I just got some great news that my brother who lives in Va. is going to brave the elements and come up to see me at Thanksgiving. We don’t get to see each other that often and this will be his second trip up here this year. I”m just so excited he will be joining us for such a wonderful time of the year. And, he just told me he is bringing me the most wonderful Christmas present. When he was up this summer he showed me pictures of his old metal three seater glider. Do any of you remember these? Well if you check out ebay you’ll see they range from $300 to $600!! I couldn't believe it. So he found me one with 2 metal rocking chairs to go with it. They have recently been sand blasted and repainted and he got them for less than $150.00. Here is a picture of the one he has which is just like mine. I just love these old gliders an have not been able to find one around here.

REALLY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ
(well at least to me)

I have a questions for all you photographers out there. Some of you take the most amazing pictures and I’m in having major difficulties in trying to take a certain picture. I have a lot of old primitive decorating books, and want to list some on ebay,but everytime I take pics of the inside pages I get a terrible glare. It looks awful. I use a Sony Cybershot which is a 7.2 megapixels. And you all know that presentation is everything when trying to sell an item. Does anyone know how to take a picture without all that glare and fuzziness? I’ve tried propping the book up, moved it around the room many times, and even standing over top of it, trying not to break my neck. Here are a few I took last night. If anyone can help I would be so grateful!!!

I hope to list these books sometime today so hopefully someone can help.

Boo!! Happy Halloween

Hi everyone!

Yes, I know it’s two days early, but I will be busy the next few days and won’t be able to send you spooky greetings. LOL Not that I’ve been around the last month, huh? Well I have been so tied up with my new job and fundraising events, it’s been crazy. I’ve barely had time to do any puttering or tweaking around the house. I did manage to get my corner cupboard up. It’s only been sitting on the floor for almost three months. What do you think?

Hmmm….maybe I should have been closer. Okay….here’s a better shot.

Well, you get the idea. I still have to figure out how I want to decorate it. I’ve changed it a few times and still not happy with it.

I rearranged a few other things this evening. You know how it is, just can’t stand to see things the same way for more than a few days. I’ll be watching TV or sitting at the computer …………and BAM I get picture in my head of how this or that should look and sometimes just get up and start changing things around. My husband thinks I’m nuts. LOL

Another thing that seems to have taken over our lives is we are in the process of refinancing our home. We got a fantastic interest rate and are taking some cash out to finish closing in our breezeway or as it will now be known…the new mudroom. I can’t wait!!! I’m so excited. I’m also going to put my new treadmill out there. Can’t just sit in front of this computer all the time. :)

And tomorrow night my honey gets back behind the wheel of a race car for the first time this season. He had a shoulder replacement surgery last spring and has not been able to race all summer. For me it’s been a much needed rest, but to him it’s been agony. So we will be at the track tomorrow night for a 100 lap race. Wish him luck!

Here’s a few more pictures of some changes. Next time I hope to show some of our bedroom. Moved the furniture around last weekend and re-arranged the pictures.

Have a fun and safe Halloween! Oh, and we are going out Saturday night and I will be a dressed as a fifties bad girl. I just love dressing up and this costume is so fun! Maybe I’ll post some pictures.

Apple Dumplings with a secret ingredient

Fall is definitely here! It's a cold and rainy day here in upstate New York, but the rain did hold off long enough to put up some corn stalks and Indian corn this morning. I took a few pictures, but they are not the best as I was standing in the doorway so I wouldn't melt. LOL

My bittersweet came in the mail a few days ago and I've randomly placed some here and there.

I got 2 pounds and it really goes a long way. I thought that wouldn't be enough. I didn't know that they were poisonous, but someone told me the other day that the berries were. Is that true? I had always heard that poinsettias were poisonous to animals, is this the same?

Along with Fall comes big juicy wonderful apples. My mother-in-law always makes applesauce which we love, love love! So, she had some apples left over and I decided to try something different. Apple dumplings sounded delicious. Sorry I forgot to take pictures of them, but let me tell you they were the best I've ever had so I wanted to share the recipe with y'all. And you won't believe what the secret ingredient is. I didn't let my hubby see me making them because I know he wouldn't not have even tried them if he saw what I put in them. He loved them and asked for seconds. I got the recipe from Pioneer Woman and she gives step by step (with pictures!) instructions.

Apple Dumplings

2 granny smith apples
2 cans crescent rolls
2 sticks of butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
cinnamon
1 small can Mountain dew (secret ingredient!) I used about 3/4 of a 12oz can

Peel and core apples. Cut apples into 8 slices each. Roll each apple slice in a crescent roll. Place in a 9 x 13 pan. Melt butter, then add sugar and barely stir. Add vanilla, stir, and pour over apples. Pour mountain dew around the edges of the pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Serve with ice cream, and spoon some of the sweet sauces from the pan over the top.

Mums, pumpkins and A beautiful Fall Day

Mother nature has been especially good to us this weekend. The days have been absolutely gorgeous! It’s like I put in a special order.

The nights have been quite nippy though. So we decided it was time to clean out the coal stove to get it ready. Tonight is going to be in the thirties. BRRR!!

Yesterday I went to my favorite place for pumpkins, mums and corn stalks. They have the most amazing selection with all different colors. I got some orange mums to go with the yellow ones I already had. Got some corn broom stalks and new scarecrow. I decided to wait on the corn stalks. We got some HUGE pumpkins Saturday at a place where we get our corn and he said we could come up and just cut some down for free! So next weekend we will go up and gather some stalks to finish the fall decor outside. I asked him if he knew where I could get some bittersweet and he told us where there was a hole bunch, but said don’t get caught. I guess you are not supposed to pick them in NY or maybe it's just our county. So, I ordered 2 lbs on ebay and they will be here in a few days. They are full of berries. I can’t wait to get them.

We did a little more decorating outside yesterday. Now it’s beginning to look a lot better. Just waiting for the corn stalks.

Now I have been promising to make something with all the apples we have so I’m going to make apple dumplings. I found an awesome recipe on allrecipes.com. I love using the recipes there as they have feedback from folks who have tried them and if they tweaked or changed the recipe they include that too.

A little Fall Decorating

I actually had a few minutes to myself today and was able to do a little decorating for Fall and a little tweaking. I don’t have everything done yet, but it’s a start. Here are a few pictures of what I’ve done so far.

I have been drooling over all the pictures of textures! So of course I had to try it too. And……it is very addicting. I have never been able to get a good photo close up and didn’t know about the “macro” thing. They turned out crisp and clear. Awesome. Here are just a few pics, but more to come later. Enjoy!

I am so impressed with myself! Didn’t they turn out super nice? I think I really need to read the manual that came with my new camera. Maybe I should take some more. Okay……………wait just a few minutes. Here ya go.

Blog Tweaking and Working

I’ve been playing around with different templates for my blog. I’ve only changed it three or four times this weekend so if you’ve visited lately things are not quite done yet and it’s getting late so I will probably not change much more since I have to get up early and go to work. I had been laid off for three months and last week was my first week at my new job. I have to re-program my body to start getting up at 6 am again. That’s tough especially since I’m such a late night person.

Since I was laid off, I wasn’t able to sell anything on my web site because of unemployment. So now I will start adding new prim goodies over the next month or so. I’ve found so many tutorials in blog land from such wonderfully talented ladies, I can’t wait to try them out. The first one I’m going to make is a make-do shoo fly screen cover found in the summer edition of Mercantile Gatherings. This was submitted by Char of the The Pickled Pepper Patch. If you haven’t seen her blog, you must click right over (after you’ve finished visiting with me of course). It is a wealth of primitive information from tutorials, recipes, links, tips and freebies. So be sure to go and visit Char!

So, needless to say, I’m really excited to be able to add to my site again and I feel very fortunate to have found a great job so quickly. I know that there are folks who have been laid off for a very long time and are still looking.

Hot and Humid

Boy, it’s sure been hot, hot, hot, and humid, humid, humid. Now I'm not one to normally complain about the heat, but this is ridiculous. I couldn’t even get dressed at 6am this morning without sweating. Now I’m looking forward to Fall and all that comes along with it. It's finally cooled down some this evening and supposed to rain all day tomorrow. That will give me time to do some tweaking and re-arranging in my new kitchen. I’ve been blog hopping and looking at the posts from several who posted pictures of textures in their homes. Now I’ve got the bug and want to take some of mine. Maybe tomorrow!

So, anyway, I just download windows live writer and wanted to play around with the program. Look at the pictures. Love the effects don’t you? You can do so many cool things with images and formatting. Just google windows live writer and it’s free to download.

You can crop, tilt, watermark, do cool borders like the rounded corners I did on the one on the right, neat effects like black and white and sepia tone.

Well I think the heat has really gotten to me! So I will close for tonight. But I wanted to share how cool this program is, You got to check it out.

Newly Remodeled kitchen Done!!

Well, almost done. Still a few more things to tweak and add, but it's 99% complete. Woo Hoo!! Whew, I am so glad too. The timing couldn't be better. I start a new job on Monday. Being laid off these past 3 months has given me time to help with the remodel and being able to put things back together at a slower pace rather than just weekends. I'm still decorating, but it's off to a good start. You'll notice some bare walls, but that will be taken care of real soon. Hope you enjoy the pics and I would love to know what you think.

We haven't got the shelving up yet so the TV is sitting on the cupboard that houses the coffee maker. I have changed my mind a million times about this wall. You can see how it is lower than the wall with the cabinet and too low for wall cabinets and I've been struggling with this corner. I want the TV to sit up on a shelf, but still not sure how to tie it in with the upper cabinets. Just to the left of this "blank" wall is the sink.

This is the other side of the "blank" wall. I have shorter cabinets up, but they seemed to crowd the wall and draw attention to the fact that it is low so I hung my plate rack up and love it there. Now I'm trying to decide if I should put shelving up or just leave it like it is. What do you think?

Here is a picture of the cupboard hanging in the dining area. I think I have that like I want it. I only changed it five or six times. The bunny pic looks really good next to the black dont ya think?

This was taken from the kitchen looking into the dining area. Remember the pic from an earlier post with the fridge where the cupboard is now. Told ya that wasn't going to stay there. Oh and neither is the fan, it's been really hot here the last two days. Finally getting some summer weather here in upstate NY. And I took the vertical blinds down and hung up some curtains. I like that much better, although I'm not sure if these particular ones will stay there or not. I only hung up a cheap tension rod to see if this would look better so I need to get a nicer rod to hang up there.

This was shot looking in from the living room. The dry sink was my birthday present this year. I got it from a local primitive and country gift shop. My hubby has really good taste, don't ya think?

Picture of the new computer desk area. This used to be the dining room. I just love the way this turned out. We took the old desk and moved it here and made a new top for it using the same formica that is on the island. I wanted it to have a built in look. We also used the hutch from the old desk, just took the ugly backing off of it. Still have to decorate this area...

Here is a good pic of the kitchen. See the new farm sink? That's not quite finished yet. Still have to paint the side pieces to match the cabinets and paint the trim around it to match the counter tops. Oh and the rugs still have the tags on them. Just picked them up tonight and contemplating if I like them or not. There is a smaller one in front of the stove.

This pic shows the the island looking into the kitchen. Love the new rusted tin hanging lights. They also match the one hanging in front of the sink.

This is looking in from the dining area. It a good picture of the new floors. They are hand scraped from Virginia Mills. This is called golden teak. Gorgeous!

Advise Please!!!

Okay, I really need some help. If you look at the picture in the previous post, you'll see the one with the "ugly" vertical blinds on the patio door. The more I look at that picture, the more I think those blinds just don't work!! I have to have something there that will give us some privacy, but I'm not sure what I should use. Perhaps a tabbed curtain that can be drawn back during the day and pulled at night? When the hard wood flooring was installed a few days ago, I had to take them down because they're too long and I really don't want to put them back up. What should I do. Your help would really be appreciated!! Please, please, please???

We are really close to having this kitchen finally done! It's a good thing too, cause I'm just exhausted. Got the last of the walls painted this afternoon. All of the cabinets are up except for one. That's because I've getting lazy and didn't paint it until the other day. My patience is all but gone with this project and I'm really frustrated because the dishwasher and sink are not hooked up yet. I know....whine, whine,whine. Even I'm tired of hearing myself. LOL

On a good note though, I wanted to share this picture of the beautiful early settlers primitive hanging cupboad that I got a few weeks ago. This is the pic from the auction. Right now it's still in the box, but I will have that baby hanging up soon. I just love it!

Making Progress and still sane! It's a miracle.

Can we say crazy! It's been almost a month since I last posted. It feels like a year! So much going on it's hard to keep up. First of all, I got married on July 7th. We flew out to Las Vegas and got married and honeymooned there for 5 days. We had a fantastic time. It was romantic and exciting. We only told our family so it was quite a surprise to our friends when we got back. Working on a reception for family and friend for early September. That will be a lot of fun.

Since we got back, we have worked on the kitchen remodel every day and it's almost done. Just a few more weeks. The floor will be down Sunday and then a few more things to do and I will finally have a functioning kitchen again. What a disruption this has been.

My youngest daughter is expecting her second son in September so I have been planning a shower for her. It was supposed to be at our home, but since the kitchen isn't finished we had it a local civic center this past Saturday. We had a lot of fun and she got some really nice things. She was happy and that made me happy. They sure have come a long way since I had my kids.

I just had to post this pic of this diaper cake. A good friend of mine made one for her daughter who just had a little boy a few months ago and I thought it was adorable so I asked her to make one for me. It turned out great and my daugher, Amanda just loved it.

I've posted some pics of the kitchen. It is still evolving, but it's come a long way. I am so ready for it to just be done, but I'm really happy with it so far. A lot of changes along the way. Nothing ever ends up like you plan. I'm just getting impatient and ready to decorate and get my house cleaned up. My primitive pretties have been packed up way too long. I did sneak the pie safe in the kitchen temporarily. :)

The new island. Woo Hoo! It's pretty big at 4' wide by 8' long and chock full of cabinets. Something is definitely wrong with me if I don't have enough cabinets now. LOL

My new pot rack over the stove.(don't mind the extra piece of bead board in front of the stove) Boy did I stress over this! It had to be 30" wide exactly to fit and it had to have a light. I searched everywhere and finally found one on eBay. We stained it in the early american to match the bead board. I painted the cabinets a sage green (which I think adds a colonial touch).

Let there be light

Hi Girls! I know it's been a few weeks since I posted. We have been so busy with the remodel. Well in to week #3 and it doesn't seem like it will ever end. It's really exciting seeing the progress and change, but I don't think I will ever get my house clean again!! I just can't believe how much disruption remodeling one room can have on one's entire life. Okay, enough grumbling. The pic above really has nothing to do with the new kitchen, but it sure looks better in updates rather the one's below.

Here is a picture of the skylight's going in. I can't believe what a difference that makes. I was a little nervous about natural light since we only installed the small window on the back wall. Since that's the lowest part of the ceiling we could only fit a 24x36 and that is where the sink will go. I've been busily painting (in between rain showers, which have been constant over the last week) the cabinets. Got two coats on and the glaze last night. They really look great! I love the new sage green and it looks so colonial.

We will have a little break next week as we are going to Las Vegas on vacation. How exciting is that. I sure hope it's sunny and no rain. Our summer so far has really sucked this year. We will be staying at the Mirage for 5 wonderful days. My honey has never flown before and he's getting edgy. Considering he races dirt modifieds every weekend during racing season, you wouldn't think flying would phase him. Funny, huh?

Day One and Two Pics of the remodel

Here are some pics of day one and two of construction. It doesn't look like much yet, but it will in the end. Rain has delayed any more work, but hopefully tomorrow they can start again.

Day One....

My wonderful covered patio being framed up for the new kitchen. I sort of have mixed emotions. On one hand, I know I will love the new kitchen and on the other, I will miss sitting out there on warm sunny days.

Hmmm.... now what do we do????

Day Two...

Here it is all framed in. It sure looks funny, not to mention a mess everywhere. All the patio furniture is in the garage, so that's our new hangout until the deck is built here.

Our very good friend and Contractor, Kevin, really pooped after two days of working. LOL

Kitchen remodel has finally begun!

We have been crazy busy the past week. I am sooooo excited that the kitchen/dining room remodel and expansion has finally taken off. They started at 8am sharp last Saturday and continued on Sunday. We are very lucky to have a close friend who is a contractor and is helping us out. We are doing a lot of the work our selves so the labor cost is minimal. We had the layout all done. I have been working with an amazing designer at Hope Depot and we spent two hours Saturday making changes till I thought it was perfect.....until Sunday when the walls went up and the subflooring and we discovered the back wall was only going to be 6 1/2 feet tall. Yikes!! The original contractor said it would be 7 1/2 feet and it gets higher from that point since it is going to be a cathedral ceiling. So of course I went in to panic mode when we started measuring and found that the cabinets would only be 8" from the counter top. I immediately got on the phone and called the designer and she fixed everything in about five minutes. Whew, that was close to a disaster as we thought we were going to have to tear everything apart and raise the roof. I will post some pics tomorrow. I got the paint and the glaze for the cabinets and will do a test tomorrow to see how it's going to turn out. Boy do I have a lot of painting to do, but I think putting a personal touch on the cabinets will make it very nice.

We also put up a privacy fence along side the pool and the gazebo. It looks awesome! I love, love, love it. Well, this is short, but I just wanted to give everyone a quick update. Stay tuned for pics tomorrow.

Weeds Beware!

Today was just beautiful! Finally... I was really beginning to wonder if we were going to have any warm weather at all. Yesterday was cloudy and cool and it sprinkled on and off all afternoon. We did have a wonderful day though. My sweetie surprised me with such a wonderful birthday present. I have always wanted a dry sink. I was up at the crack of dawn to go to yard sales with my daughter and when I got home there was the most awesome dry sink sitting in the dining room with a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me. He is so sweet. He had no idea what a dry sink was so he went to Piccadilly Lane, a local primitive and country shoppe, and told them he wanted a dry sink and didn't have a clue what he was looking for, but the fixed him right up.

Then he took me out to a wonderful dinner and we went out to celebrate! I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.

Today was was a long, but very productive one. I bought a weeping pussy willow tree yesterday and went to pick it up this morning. My daughter came up to help me plant flowers and my beautiful tree in the flower bed beside the pool. We actually have been working on this bed for three summers. I told my fiancee that I wanted a "big" raised flower bed and boy did I get one! I came home from work and he had dug out a flower bed big enough to sit a house on. Well....not really, but it was huge. The first year we bought stone to put around it and with me working so much and not enough time to tend to it, the weeds took over. So last year we dug it up again and started over. I put garden fabric down and filled it with dirt. You are going to laugh as I should have known better, but he went out with the backhoe and got some dirt that was hauled in the year before and since it was dumped on top of weeds and grass, it was just a big mess. I couldn't weed it fast enough to keep the weeds out of it. So, I got frustrated and didn't do a darn thing with all last summer.

So now here we are Spring of 2009, I was determined it was not going to get the best of me this year. I downsized it a bit (you can tell in the first pic, where all the weeds still are) and spent two days weeding the darn thing again, soaked the heck out of it with weed killer for two weeks. Now we have a "weed free" bed, time to fill 'er up with flowers. We went to the nursery and got a dump truck of composted mix and came back and filled that sucker up again. (oh, and yes more garden fabric, two layers this time.) And off to the garden center we went again. Below are the results. I'm just so garsh darn proud of it. I need to get some mulch on it in the next couple of days, but I won this year! Weeds beware!!!

Can you help me find a tart warmer....

Hi girls!
I need some help. I have this wonderful ceramic tart warmer that was a gift quite a few years ago from a great friend of mine. She got this on ebay and I haven't been able to find another one like it. It is my favorite. I love the way it comes apart (as you can see in the pics) in to three pieces. It's the perfect size and non-electric so I can put it anywhere.

Does anyone know where I can find another one like it? I have looked everywhere! Most of them are so small a tart wouldn't fit in it. This one is nice and large.

Gazebo flowers and gardens

Hi Girls!
Hope y'all are having a great Sunday. It's kinda chilly here at 58 degrees. The wind makes it seem much cooler. Yesterday was much nicer and we got some flowers planted around the gazebo. I went to Hillside Gardens and looked around and they have gorgeous flowering bushes and flowers, but the prices were outrageous. After going to a few more places, I ended up at Lowes. They have a really nice garden center and got some annuals for the instant color that my boyfriend insisted on. He doesn't have the patience to wait for plants to bloom. I did get two really nice golden bushes that really pop next to the black mulch. I still have to get the flat rocks to put under the gazebo, but I like the way it turned out so far. You'll notice the ramp in the front which I"m going to add a walkway to with white stone.

Looks a lot better, huh? We still have to tweak it some to get it to stand straight. It wants to lean backwards for some reason. While I was outside snapping pics, I thought I would take a few more of some of the other gardens.

Flowers for the Gazebo??

We had a wonderful Memorial day. First thing was to cut the grass and weed the flowers which we actually got accomplished. Then, finally, we got the pool going. Had to fill it up with water then shock it. Boy was it an ugly green! Doesn't make one want to go swimming, but by tomorrow it should clear up. We had a great cookout with family. Then back home to veg on the couch. Tomorrow's project is to plant flowers around the gazebo and go get some hanging baskets for it. We just got it at the end of the summer last year so I haven't done anything with it yet. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I was thinking about purple and yellow baskets to hang, and not sure what to plant around it yet. I guess I'll decide on the fly tomorrow, but if you have ideas, let me know. Here a couple of pictures we took before we got it level. I almost put it on Craiglist to sell it. I got so frustrated because we (my fiancee and I) kept arguing as to where it should go, I wanted it to stay where it is and he wanted it right beside the pool, but I finally won so it's going to stay. LOL

I'll be sure and post new pictures tomorrow once we get the flowers around it. Next, is to put the privacy fence up along the back side of the pool. Maybe in a couple of weeks...???

Look what I got!!!!

I just can't believe I finally got a gorgeous antique drop leaf table. I have wanted one for years. It's a maple bird's eye gate leg table with 6 ladder back rush seat chairs. It is in beautiful condition! The lady I bought it from had purchased it over 30 years ago and taken very good care of it. Our dining room is very small and I had a farm table that I had custom made a few years ago and it is very nice, but took up too much room. The drop leaf table is perfect. It is only 19" wide when the sides are down. I wanted something that wouldn't take up so much room, but would be big enough for family dinners. This has two extra leaves with it too. Even though we are about the remodel our kitchen and dining room and will have the extra room, I couldn't pass this up. Isn't it beautiful!!

Long overdue

It's been a really long time since I've posted anything to my blog. Lots of things going on and many changes in my life. I got laid off a few weeks ago after 14 years. It's hard to get used to all this free time. :) But, if you're going to be out of work, Spring and Summer is the best time. I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do yet, but thinking about going back to school. On a good note, we are going to remodel our kitchen and work begins in another week. Hopefully I will be able to post the progress here. I've been contiplating over and over about the layout and colors. It's enough to drive you crazy, but I think I finally have decided. Does a woman ever really decide??? Here is a pic that I used as inspiration.

We are doing open shelving along the wall where the sink will go. I ordered the farm sink the other day and it just arrived. This is so exciting! I can't wait until the construction begins.

Cookie Exchange ~~blog style

Hi Everyone,

It's been a loooong day. Started out with more sleet and ice. I'm tired of this stuff already! Friday we have a huge snow storm headed our way, then a break on Saturday and we supposed to get pounded again on Sunday. It's been so busy at work. In addition to managing the facilities and tenants I also write grants and today was the deadline for one that we are applying for with PTFP for a backup generator. With all the ice storms lately, I sure hope we get it!! It's a lot of work to put one of these together and make seven copies. Since it's due tomorrow (nothing like wating till the 11th hour) I had to over night it. I pulled in to Kinkos at exactly 6pm which is the deadline for Fed Ex pickup. I saw the Fed Ex truck as I was pulling in the parking lot and pulled right up to the door right behind him as he was loading the packages and stopped him just in the nick of time. After all that work I would have been really upset to have missed him. Tomorrow I have to do the close out reports for another grant that we just finished. Then.........I can relax a little and get ready for some down time. Taking Christmas Eve off through New Years Day. I can't wait! Then it can snow and snow and snow. :-)

This weekend I'm going to start some baking (I'm a little behind). I want to make several kinds of cookies and have only come up with two so far - peanut butter blossoms and kalachkis. At work, we have a tradition of a cookie exchange. We each make a batch of cookies and then bring them in and get to sample them all, then we exchange recipes. It is always so much fun so I thought it would be fun to do that here. So if you have a good recipe, please leave me a message and post it to your blog so we can exchange cookie recipes.

Here's my first recipe:

Peanut Butter Blossoms
48 Hershey Kisses
1/2 cup shortening or margarine
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking soda

Heat oven to 375 degree......... Remove wrappers from kisses.Beat shortening, peanut butter in a large bowl until well blended. Add brown sugar,sugar, egg and vanilla, beat til well blended. Stir together flour and soda, gradually add to peanut butter mixture.Shape dough into one inch ball. Roll into granulated sugar; place on ungreased cookie sheet.Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Immediately press kiss into the center of each cookie, cookie will crack around edges, remove from cookie sheet, let cool. Makes about 4 dozen.

Variation; use only 1 cup of flour and add 1/3 cup baking cocoa for chocolate peanut butter blossom cookies.

Snow and Ice Storm

The weather outside is nasty. Yuck. I went to work early this morning so I could leave early and beat the snow and ice. I made it!! We are supposed to get an inch of ice and 10 inches of snow. I just hate this stuff when I have to drive in it. I wanted to take some pics, but was too lazy to go outside so I took a few through the sliding glass door and window. LOL

It doesn't look like much now, but there's a layer of ice on everything. But, we have the generator ready to go and it's nice and warm and cozy in here.

Teken from the "inside" of the sliding glass door. The pool looks so sad and lonely out there, doesn't it? Makes me dream of long hot summer days.

Of course, this is not snow, but I thought this was so cute. Coco seems to think that the tree skirt is his new bed. He's totally taken it over. LOL

Well, I was just taking a break from the work I brought home to do so I better get back to it.

Our Primitive Christmas Home

Don't you just love this time of year! I've been decorating the house all week long. I can't seem to leave it alone so I've changed it a dozen times. LOL I thought I would post some pics of everything so far. Subject to change of course. :-)

I decided not to put our "big" tree up this year and just use this little old tree that sits in an old barrel. This one is usually in the dining room. When I brought this home two years ago, Scott says "what are you doing with that thing" and I said "well, dear its for the dining room. He just had a fit and said "oh no". So when he left the house, I brought it in and decorated it, and he just laughed when he got home said "I knew that would be in the house when I got back". LOL

I haven't got the decorations up yet. When we got it down from the top of the Garage it hit the floor and some of the lights broke so I was Walmart bound last night to get some more.

Looking in to the living room from the dining room. Ooops! forgot to move my Mt. Dew bottle.

This is an old hope chest that my fiancee's mother picked up for me. I put a homespun cloth on it and it sits in between the couch and the love seat.

This is not really decorated for Christmas, but I just love our coal stove. Scott built the new tile base over the summer for it.

Look up, see the buttery, isn't it so prim. I have two double windows in the living room and one above each one. I bought them from Shelley of Winterberry Prims. See my earler post for a link to her picture trail.

This is another one my treasures from Shelley. I bought it to put in the bathroom for storage next the the mirror and it just never made its way there. I thought I would use it for some decorating until after Christmas.

Old man Santa in the corner. He's made from an old tree then handpainted. This is the first year I let him stay indoors, most of the time he's out on the porch.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

I've been multi-tasking like crazy these last few days. Primitive Thymes Gift Shoppe has a whole new look thanks to Jeanne from Jean the Bean. She customized a new layout and graphics and it looks awesome. I've been tweaking it for the last few hours and wanted to know what you thought. Here's a screen shot of the new look. So what do you think. Now I have to get busy and upload some new items that I got for Christmas in between baking and cooking for Thanksgiving Dinner.

It's beginning to feel like Winter

Hi everyone!

I'm finally back after numerous mishaps. My computer took a power hit and fried my hard drive, got that fixed but lost all my information and links. :((

My fiancee had shoulder replacement surgery three weeks ago and then a few days after the surgery his back went out, but he's mending nicely now. And our little Bailey got hit by a car and broke her pelvic bone. She was at Cornell Animal Hospital for a few days and we have to keep her confined for 8 weeks. Imagine a one year old chocolate lab being crated for eight weeks, that's not much fun, but she's on the way to a full recovery. We just have to put a sling under her belly to support that leg for a few more weeks. It's been crazy around here for the past few weeks, but things are getting back to normal. I sure have missed being on line and visiting every one.

There is so much going on with all the blog giveaways. You can just click for hours. LOL

Hope everybody is having a great Fall. Old man winter came to town today! Temps have been in the 50's for the past few weeks. It's freezing here now. Guess it's time to settle in and keep warm. Calling for snow all week. I've got so much to do to update things, it will keep me busy until January.

Lots to catch up on

It seems like I have been gone forever. I had computer issues and just got everything straightend out. What a fiasco! Thanks to everyone who left comments and I am going to try and catch up here. Can't do it in one night though. :)

It's finally feeling like Fall here in New York. The leaves are beautiful shades of orange and red. The air is clean and crisp. And I still haven't got all of my Fall decorations up! We have been so busy latley. We put down our new hardwood flooring in the kitchen and dining room this weekend. It is gorgeous! I'm so glad to see the carpet ripped up (that we just installed two years ago) in the dining room. Boy was that a mistake. It didn't fare well at all against the contstant traffic. The flooring is teak and it's the wider boards and made in a mill in Va. They call it hand scraped. It has dents and dings so it looks like it just came out of an old colonial home. I will put some pics up later this week. We, I say we, but I really mean my significant other and his helpers, built a new base in the living room for the coal stove we bought last year. We had a pellet stove and sold it for this and it's the best decision we ever made! I love that constant heat and we are sure lucky since the cost of fuel is outrageous.

I know the economy is really shaky these days so I've been trying everything to promote my store. I donated four gift certificates to our local PBS station, where I work, for the on line auction and I'm not sure if that is the reason, but I got two sales this week! They featured Primitive Thymes of the main page so I thought that was really cool. Among many of my jobs at the station, I used to manage the Auction department there.

Well this is a long enough post for tonight. Just wanted to let everyone know that I didn't drop off the face of the earth.

Can't wait to share some pictures later this week.

They finally arrived. My new line of soy candles. I'm just so excited!! Just unpacked to make sure nothing was broken. I have been buying these candles from a local primitive gift shoppe for years and they beat any other that I've ever tried hands-down. I will never go back to Yankee and those were my favorite. My favorite thing is they are double wicked which makes a big difference and they burn down even all the way to the bottom. I'm offering free shipping with them too.

Making Changes

Well, I'm really liking this "blogging" thing. I love playing around with the computer and making changes. So......I've changed this template 4 or 5 times already. LOL I'm waiting on my graphic artist to finish up my new layout and graphics for my new store so I have to have something to do. Once that's up and I have my new banner, I will start marketing my new store to the many, many resources I've found on the web. Patience has never been a virtue of mine so I'm really getting impatient. I have browsed so many prim blogs today and there are a lot of talented ladies out there. I hope I measure up.
